Smoke Control Area Self-Check

Answer three short questions about your property, appliance and fuel to see which part of the Clean Air Act 1993 applies to you.

This tool does not hold its own copy of the DEFRA exempt appliances list or the authorised fuels list, since these are maintained by government and change over time. Where an answer depends on them, this tool points you to the official source rather than guessing.

1. Is your property in a designated smoke control area?

Not sure? Use the UK Government's postcode checker to find out, then come back and answer below.

2. Is the appliance on DEFRA's list of exempt appliances?

This is the stove, boiler or burner you are using or considering buying.

3. Are you burning, or planning to burn, only an authorised fuel in it?

Authorised fuels are the smokeless or otherwise approved fuels permitted for use in smoke control areas.

This tool gives general information based on the Clean Air Act 1993 only. It does not replace a determination by your local authority, who are responsible for enforcing smoke control rules in your area. Always confirm your specific position with them before buying, installing or using a solid fuel appliance.
