A pellet stove or boiler is not a fit-and-forget appliance. It has a moving mechanism (the auger, the screw that feeds pellets from the hopper into the burner), a combustion chamber that fills with ash, and a flue that needs to stay clear. None of the individual jobs takes long, but they come round often enough that it is worth knowing the rhythm before you commit to a system.
Daily and every-few-days tasks
How often the ash pan needs emptying depends on how many hours the appliance runs and the ash content of the pellets you burn. ENplus-A1 pellets, the higher quality grade, typically leave less residue than lower grades, but even so a stove running daily through winter will usually need its ash pan emptied every few days, a job of five minutes or so. A boiler with a larger ash bin can often go a week between empties. The viewing glass on a stove also picks up a fine haze from combustion residue and needs a wipe with a dry cloth or a proprietary glass cleaner roughly weekly.
Monthly checks
Once a month, it is worth opening the hopper and checking the auger feed for dust buildup or a jam, and checking the burn pot for clinker, the hardened residue that can form if pellet quality is poor or the burn is running inefficiently. This is a fifteen to thirty minute job on most domestic appliances, and the exact steps and frequency are set out in the manufacturer's handbook for your specific model, which should always take precedence over general guidance. Annual jobs: sweeping and servicing
The flue liner, the inner sleeve that carries combustion gases up through the chimney or flue system, needs sweeping at least once a year, and more often if the appliance is run hard or the pellets are lower quality. This should be done by a sweep experienced with solid fuel and biomass appliances.
Separately, the appliance itself needs an annual service: seals, sensors, the ignition element and safety cut-outs checked, and the burner stripped and cleaned properly. This is typically booked with a HETAS-registered engineer (HETAS is the Heating Equipment Testing and Approval Scheme, the body that registers installers and engineers competent in solid biomass systems), and it is worth checking any engineer's current registration yourself on the HETAS online register. A service usually takes a few hours, sometimes a half day depending on the appliance and what it finds.

The time a pellet system asks of you
Every pellet appliance needs a person attending to it on a set rhythm: someone has to fill the hopper, empty the ash, check the auger (the screw mechanism that feeds pellets from hopper to burner) is clear, and book the flue sweep. None of that shows up in a spreadsheet built from fuel price and appliance efficiency, but it is a real part of what a household is taking on when it chooses biomass over oil or a heat pump.
Why this differs from an oil boiler or a heat pump
An oil boiler asks for very little routine attention beyond an annual service and an occasional check of the tank gauge. An air-source heat pump asks for even less: no fuel handling at all, and servicing on a longer interval. A pellet stove or boiler sits at the other end of that scale, because pellets are a solid fuel that has to be physically moved into the appliance and the by-product of burning it has to be physically removed. Why the time cost decides satisfaction more than the price per kWh does
Two households can pay the same for pellets and end up with very different opinions of the system, because one of them minds the routine and the other does not. The chore lands hardest in the depths of winter, which is exactly when the appliance is working the most and when going out to top up a hopper is least appealing. A household that travels often, includes someone with limited mobility, or only occupies the property part of the year will find this pattern harder to sustain than a household that is home daily and does not mind the task. This is a question of temperament and circumstance, not arithmetic, and it is worth weighing before the appliance is chosen rather than after.
