Bagged or bulk: how the two delivery methods compare

Which one suits your house depends on how much fuel you burn in a season and whether a delivery lorry can reach a storage area.

What ENplus certification actually checks, and why it matters

ENplus is the certification scheme that grades wood pellets by what they're made from and how consistently they're manufactured. A bag carrying the ENplus mark has been produced to a specification covering raw material, moisture, ash content, mechanical strength and how much dust the pellets shed in handling. Buying uncertified pellets is not automatically a problem, but it removes the one independent check you have on what's actually in the bag.

What the certification covers

The standard sets requirements across several properties of the pellet. Between them, these determine how cleanly the fuel burns and how much wear it puts on the moving parts of your system.

  • Raw material: virgin wood versus reclaimed or mixed material, which affects ash content and consistency between batches
  • Moisture content: how much water is left in the pellet after drying, which affects calorific value and how completely it burns
  • Ash content: how much solid residue is left after combustion, which determines how often the ash tray needs emptying
  • Mechanical durability: how well the pellet resists crushing and breaking into dust during transport and handling
  • Diameter and length consistency: how uniformly sized the pellets are, which affects how evenly the auger feeds them

Pellets are graded A1, A2 or B under the scheme, with A1 the tightest specification and the grade most domestic stoves and boilers are designed around. Manufacturer instructions usually specify which grade the appliance expects, and that instruction is worth following.

Why moisture and fines matter more than they look

Moisture content matters because water has to be driven off before the wood itself can burn, so a wetter pellet gives up more of its energy to that process and less to heating your house. Fines, meaning the loose dust and broken fragments that come off pellets during transport and handling, matter for a different reason: they don't feed through the auger (the screw mechanism that carries pellets from hopper to burner) the way a whole pellet does, and they can pack together and cause it to jam or feed unevenly. A bag with a high proportion of fines often means rougher handling somewhere between mill and delivery, not necessarily a poorly made pellet, but the effect on your appliance is the same either way.

What poor-quality pellets do to a stove or boiler

Inconsistent moisture and excess fines don't just reduce efficiency; they change how the appliance behaves. Uneven feeding from a clogged auger produces uneven combustion, which tends to leave more unburnt residue and tar on the burner pot and glass. Higher ash content means more frequent emptying of the ash tray, and if ash accumulates faster than the appliance is designed to shed it, it can interfere with air intake and combustion quality. None of this tends to show up as a single dramatic failure; it shows up as a stove that needs cleaning more often and a service engineer who spends longer on each visit.

How much storage a season's fuel actually needs

A pellet system draws its fuel from a store built to hold months' worth of supply, so before delivery becomes a live option the property needs somewhere dry to keep that fuel. How much space that takes is set by how much heat the house actually needs over a season.

Consumption follows heat demand, not floor area

The amount of fuel a boiler or stove gets through in a year tracks its heat demand, the total energy needed for space and water heating, measured in kWh. Two similarly sized houses can need very different volumes of pellets depending on insulation, glazing and how hot the radiators run, so a rule of thumb based on bedroom count will mislead you either way. What the store itself has to provide

Whatever the volume works out to, it has to sit somewhere dry, ventilated and off a damp floor, because pellets absorb moisture readily and swell when they do, breaking apart into fines that clog the auger (the screw mechanism feeding pellets from hopper to burner) and foul the burn. Holding a season's fuel at once means most properties need a dedicated room, outbuilding or purpose-built hopper. Delivery access decides whether bulk is possible at all

Bulk pellets arrive by tanker, which blows the fuel through a flexible hose into a fixed store, so the vehicle needs somewhere to park with hardstanding and a hose run that can actually reach the storage room. A narrow lane, a shared driveway, gated access or a store tucked round the back of the house can rule bulk delivery out even where the storage room itself is perfectly adequate.
